Since November 2025, Adrian Meier holds a Full Professorship (Chair) of Communication Science at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. Prior to that, he was Interim Chair since February 2024, concurrently with a Tenure-Track Assistant Professorship at FAU (2021–2025). Previous positions included an Assistant Professorship at the University of Amsterdam (2020–2021) and being a Research Associate at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (2015–2020). There he earned his Dr. phil. (2020, summa cum laude) and MA in Communication Science (2013–2015), as well as a BA in Communication and Political Science (2010–2013). Study and research stays took him to the universities of Gothenburg (Sweden), Madison-Wisconsin (USA), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and as a Research Fellow to the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society (Berlin).

In his research, Adrian Meier examines the individual and societal impacts of digital media and communication on indicators of "the good life,” including mental well-being, health, self-regulation, and social cohesion. His research focuses on the complex roles that social media, virtual worlds, and AI assistants play in various areas of life (e.g., work, leisure, education) and for diverse population groups (e.g., adolescents, working adults). Methodological foci include intensive longitudinal surveys (e.g., experience sampling), digital behavioral data, experiments, and AI-supported forms of research synthesis.

His research has been published in leading journals of the Communication and Media Psychology disciplines, such as Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication,Human Communication Research, New Media & Society, Media Psychology and Nature Reviews Psychology. His doctoral thesis received the Dordick Dissertation Award of the Communication & Technology Division of the International Communication Association and the Dissertation Award of the German Communication Association. Adrian Meier serves as ad-hoc reviewer for journals and conferences and as editorial board member of journals such as Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Journal of Media Psychology and Mobile Media & Communication.
