PROMISE at the CHANSE Conference in Paris

In May, part of the PROMISE team participated in the international CHANSE conference “Enhancing Well-Being for the Future” in Paris. Together with other European research projects, we discussed current challenges and perspectives related to well-being, mental health, and societal transformations across Europe.

As part of the session “Well-being & new technologies”, our project lead Tobias Dienlin presented the project PROMISE: Improving Social Media Policies for Youth Well-Being. The presentation focused in particular on key project milestones, an overview of the different work packages, and the tasks and research activities that still need to be addressed during the remaining project period. In addition, the session created space to discuss challenges and experiences within international and interdisciplinary research projects.

The conference offered many opportunities for exchange not only with researchers, but also with several European research funding institutions. Particularly interesting were the perspectives shared by organizations such as the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the OECD, which provided insights into current developments and challenges in international research collaboration.

One particular highlight of the conference was the keynote speech by Rutger Hoekstra (Leiden University) on “A WISE transition”. The keynote explored new ways of thinking about prosperity, sustainability, and societal well-being together, while critically reflecting on traditional economic indicators such as GDP.

In addition to the panels and discussion sessions, the programme also focused on networking and exchange formats, including sessions on research ethics, participatory methods, and innovative methodological approaches in well-being research.

Another highlight was a guided tour across the campus of the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, where the conference took place. Founded in 1925 with an international vision, the campus continues to bring together students, researchers, as well as architectural styles and cultures from all over the world. Through its many houses inspired by the architecture and culture of individual countries, the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris creates a space for intercultural exchange, collaborative learning, and international community life. Its founding idea — connecting people from different cultural backgrounds through shared living and learning and enabling them to benefit from and learn with one another — remains remarkable and perhaps more important than ever today.

Although not the entire PROMISE team was able to attend the conference in person, we were able to take away many valuable impulses, perspectives, and ideas from the discussions and exchanges, which will continue to guide and support our ongoing project work.
