Academic Background

Studied Journalism, Political Science, and Sociology in Münster and Bonn. Earned a PhD (Dr. phil.) in 1978 in Münster and habilitated in 1989 in Hannover. From 1979 to 1981, press officer at a public opinion research institute. Research associate and academic councilor at the Institute for Communication Science at LMU Munich from 1981 to 1991. In 1986, visiting professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, USA. From 1991 to 1995, professor at the Ruhr University Bochum. From 1995 to 2004, professor at the Institute for Journalism at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. From 2004 to 2019, held the Chair of Communication Science at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 1999, fellow at the Shorenstein Center/John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Cambridge, USA. In the summer semester of 2011, guest researcher at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2018, visiting professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.

From 1998 to 2002, spokesperson for the Communication and Politics section in the German Association for Journalism and Communication Studies (DGPuK). From 2000 to 2002, Vice Chair, and from 2002 to 2004, Chair of the Political Communication Division of the International Communication Association (ICA). In 2006, program chair for the Political Communication Division in the American Political Science Association (APSA). From 2010 to 2012, Associate Editor for Europe for the Communication Yearbook (ICA). From 2012 to 2019, chair of the Political Communication Research Section in the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR). From 2016 to 2024, member of the Executive Board of the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA). From 1989 to 2020, co-editor of Publizistik; member of the editorial/advisory boards of: European Journal of Communication, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, International Journal of Press/Politics, Journal of Political Marketing, Nordicom Review, Global Media Journal (German Edition), Revista Brasileira de Ciência Política, Communication & Society, doxa comunicación.
